Pediatric emergencies present unique challenges to healthcare providers, requiring specialized knowledge, skills, and an ability to respond swiftly and efficiently to ensure the safety and well-being of young patients. Emergency nurses play a crucial role in assessing and managing pediatric emergencies, which often involve conditions like respiratory distress, trauma, seizures, and infections. These types of emergencies necessitate specialized care due to the physiological differences between children and adults, including considerations regarding drug dosages, pediatric assessment, and communication with both patients and their families.
At the Federal Medical Centre in Birnin Kebbi, emergency nurses are frequently called upon to manage pediatric emergencies. However, there has been limited research regarding the preparedness of these nurses for such situations. Preparedness in this context involves both technical knowledge and the ability to act quickly and efficiently under stress, which can significantly impact the health outcomes of pediatric patients. Ensuring that emergency nurses are adequately prepared through training, resource availability, and protocol adherence is essential for optimal care delivery in pediatric emergencies. This study aims to assess the level of preparedness of emergency nurses at the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, in handling pediatric emergencies, focusing on the effectiveness of their training, resource utilization, and response times.
Despite the critical importance of pediatric emergency care, there is a lack of comprehensive studies assessing emergency nurses' preparedness in this area at the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi. Pediatric patients often present with acute and life-threatening conditions, and the quality of care provided by emergency nurses significantly influences patient outcomes. Inadequate preparedness, whether due to insufficient training or lack of experience, may lead to adverse outcomes in pediatric emergency situations. This study seeks to fill this knowledge gap by evaluating the preparedness of emergency nurses in handling pediatric emergencies, thereby identifying areas for improvement in training and resource allocation.
This study will focus on emergency nurses working at the Federal Medical Centre in Birnin Kebbi. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing accurate data on preparedness and the possibility of participant bias in self-reporting preparedness levels.
